Vreel

The Finish Line

Vreels taunting a Sbubberoon.

Vreels are wyrmlike predatory scrooks that live in desert environs where food is scarce. They are opportunistic predators, eating whatever small things they can sink their teeth into. When it comes to larger prey, however, Vreels don't back down. In fact, they do something even more daring: they challenge them to a race.

The unique method of locomotion of the Vreels allows them to expend minimal effort in actually propelling themselves forward continuously, only requiring intermittent bursts of speed. They are not the fastest scrooks on Planet Scremp, but the extra efficiency helps keep them at top speed for longer than most other scrooks, guaranteeing them the win.

Masters of Persuasion

First, the Vreels need to make sure their prey doesn't immediately run away. The fastest individual in the pack (usually between 2 to 4 members strong) carries a small grub, plant, or carcass to the victim, whatever they like best. Leery eyes burn at its resolve as the challenger proposes its "prize" for the race. As if the Vreel staring it down wasn't enough, the other members of the pack circle around it, the spinning enough to drive any creature mad.

As soon as the victim seems to accept or decline, the leader bolts away, beginning the race. It's predator versus prey, side by side, kicking dust. The Vreel's cohorts begin to close in as soon as they sense desperation, making use of cheap tactics like bumping into the victim and getting dust in their face. These races can actually get pretty close, but in the end, it doesn't make a difference.

While the prey is tired from continuous running. Their checkered patterns in motion are disorienting and distracting for those caught surrounded by them, causing them to slow down further. Once the prey has been tired out, they claim the real prize of the race.

70% of a Vreel's muscles are concentrated around the neck and jaw. It is through these muscles that it can spin around as much as it does and chomp down on its prey without letting go.
